You might have noticed I got rid of the “Extreme Alternative Cycling Magazine” catchphrase at the bottom of the cover of this issue. It was feeling a bit tired to me. The “extreme alternative” part was always tongue in cheek. Anything that proclaims itself “extreme” is likely to be pretty corny. The other side of it is—and you might have noticed this—I’m not only into alternative bikes. There have been more straight-laced road bikes and even some cycling kits in the mag the past few issues. Sometimes people message on Instagram or comment on the YouTube vids saying shit like “too much Lycra!” or “not a fan of that carbon bike.” I’m not sure what the expectation is. Is it that I police the types of bikes on the rides I attend and film, or the types of apparel people wear in my Instagram stories? I thought this was supposed to be free and inclusive. Fuck the rules? Ever since I was in college I’ve worn Lycra on and off. It’s comfortable and makes plenty of sense for certain rides. No, I don’t wear it when riding my Rivendell or Mash but I wear it when I ride the bikes for which it makes sense, like my Enve Melee and Crux DSW.  The shit I happen to be snobby about is way more convoluted and specific. Just see the “The Worst & The Best” section from this and the past few issues. Hating on Lycra or carbon or discs is trite as hell.
